Fred Champion is the much-loved founder of Champion Groundworks

Fred started the business back in 1983 with his initial team, some of whom are still proudly working on our sites today.

Although recently retired, Fred continues to be a core part of Champion. He set the 'groundwork' for the business that exists today, from our values to our work ethic. Fred will forever be a part of the Champion Groundworks team, a mentor to many and a welcome face in our office...or indeed on-site if he fancies getting his boots muddy!

Our team of over 300 reliable and local groundworkers are the backbone of Champion. We are proud to have the best in the South West. The team includes a broad range of specialists, including finishers, plant operators and drainage gangs.

Drainage Adoptions Team

Drainage Adoptions Team

They support our on-site teams with drainage inspections. They use our in-house CCTV drainage fleet when needed and manage the Section 104 adoptions process.

Health & Safety Team

Health & Safety Team

The Health and Safety of our team is our top priority, so we have a dedicated team for reducing risk. Led by our Health, Safety and Wellbeing Director, Phil Baker, the team covers PPE, SHEQ site visits and safety accreditations, as well as managing our in-house eLearning platform.

All our sites have dedicated Site Managers, who ensure efficient team management and day to day running of the site. We affectionately call them our “black hats”, due to their distinctive headgear that makes them easy to find.

Contracts Managers

Contracts Managers

Our Contracts Managers are critical to the project delivery team. They work with our Site Managers to plan, resource and programme our projects. They liaise closely with clients and on-site teams, ensuring the high quality delivery of our work.

Commercial Team

Commercial Team

Our team of quantity surveyors are responsible for all aspects of the commercial management of our projects, from estimating and payment applications to budgeting and value engineering. We work cooperatively with our clients to manage cost and maximise value. Our commercial team also includes our Procurement Manager, Darren Platt, who manages the purchase of construction materials across the business, ensuring best value in challenging market conditions. The commercial team is ably supported by our Technical Manager, Lauren Prentice.

At Champion we believe that development is the key to success. Led by Tom Smale in our Exeter office, we are committed to developing our teams, systems, and processes to guarantee the delivery of best-in-class groundworks.

Plant & Machinery

Plant & Machinery

Our plant and machinery team is responsible for the purchase, hire, maintenance and management of all Champion’s plant and machinery needs. This includes three maintenance vehicles and fitters, who are always on hand to keep the wheels rolling.

We have a dedicated vehicle workshop at our head office in Doublebois, Liskeard. Led by Darren Wilton, he meticulously maintains and repairs all the vans and vehicles at Champion.

Finance & Payroll

Finance & Payroll

Our finance team is responsible for all aspects of Champion Groundworks accounting, including payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable. They are based in our head office in Doublebois and led by Finance Director, Joanne Yeomans.
